Theme Installation

Welcome to the installation guide for PortfolioWP. This guide will walk you through the steps to install and activate the theme on your WordPress website.

Prerequisites

Before you begin, make sure you have the following:

  1. A WordPress Website: Ensure you have WordPress installed and running. If you haven’t installed WordPress yet, you can find detailed instructions on the WordPress Codex.
  2. Administrator Access: You need to have administrative access to your WordPress dashboard to install and activate themes.

Step 1: Download the Theme

  1. From WordPress.org: You can download it directly from your WordPress dashboard. Navigate to Appearance > Themes > Add New and search for “Portfolio WP”.
  2. From a Third-Party Source: Download the .zip file of the theme from our website.

Step 2: Install the Theme

Method 1: Installing from the WordPress Dashboard
  1. Log in to your WordPress Dashboard: Navigate to http://yourdomain.com/wp-admin and log in with your username and password.
  2. Navigate to Themes: In the left-hand menu, go to Appearance > Themes.
  3. Add New Theme: Click the Add New Theme button at the top of the page.
  4. Upload Theme: Search for “Portfolio WP” in the search field, and install the theme. Alternatively, if you have a .zip file, click the Upload Theme button at the top of the page. Click Choose File, select the .zip file from your computer, and then click Install Now.
  5. Activate the Theme: Once the theme is installed, click the Activate button.
Method 2: Installing via FTP
  1. Extract the Theme Files: Extract the theme .zip file on your computer. You should have a folder with the theme’s name.
  2. Connect to Your Server: Use an FTP client (like FileZilla) to connect to your web server. Enter your FTP credentials and connect to your server.
  3. Upload the Theme Folder: Navigate to the /wp-content/themes/ directory on your server. Upload the extracted theme folder into this directory.
  4. Activate the Theme: Log in to your WordPress dashboard, go to Appearance > Themes, find the newly uploaded theme, and click Activate.

Step 3: Run The Setup Wizard (Optional)

PortfolioWP includes a Setup Wizard that installs example pages and patterns to be used as a guide. Begin the Setup Wizard by completing the following steps:

  1. Navigate to the PortfolioWP dashboard PortfolioWP > Theme Setup.
  2. If prompted, install and activate the PortfolioWP Plugin in order to use the Setup Wizard.
  3. Complete the steps to add your desired pages and setup the starting structure of your portfolio website.

Step 4: Customize Your Theme

Once your theme is activated, you can start customizing it to suit your needs. Go to Appearance > Editor to access the Site Editor and adjust styles, layout, and content to your liking.

Troubleshooting

  • Theme Upload Error: If you encounter an error during the upload process, ensure that your .zip file is not corrupted and try re-uploading it. Additionally, make sure you are installing the theme in the right location, and you’re not attempting to install the theme as a plugin.
  • Missing Style Sheet Error: If you receive a “missing style sheet” error, double-check that you are uploading the correct .zip file and not an inner folder. Additionally, try clearing any plugin or browser caches.
